Consequences of Chernobyl in AustriaIncrease in cases of thyroid cancer?BackgroundAustria is also among the countries most affected, after the Ukraine, Russia and White Russia. According to reports a total of 48.000 Curie (approximately 2%) of 1.9 million Curie of the radioactivity that had been released after the disaster reached Austria [1]. Official authorities did not indicate any health consequences in Austria. However, these authorities are accused of not even having tried to find something. It has been said that reports on the increase of thyroid cancer have not been further investigated [1]. Thyroid cancerThyroid cancer is among the relatively rare diseases, there are around 2800 cases per year in Germany, with women having a higher risk than men with 2000 cases. The average age when the disease develops is between 55 (men) and 57 (women) years. 4 types of diseases exist:
One question...There is an FAQ area on the homepage of the Tschernobyl-Initiative in der Propstei Schöppenstedt e.V. (Chernobyl Initiative in the Provost's Parish of Schöppenstedt) where questions can be asked about the Chernobyl disaster. A young woman, who was 2 years old when the Chernobyl disaster happened and lived in the Vienna area at the time, used this opportunity. She had been recently diagnosed with a thyroid disease at the age of 19 years and after the surgery it turned out that it was cancer. Now this young woman, unsettled by all the contradictory opinions, asks herself whether this disease can be a consequence of the Chernobyl disaster. ...and the answer to itMore detailed investigations into the young woman's disease revealed that it is very probably that this cancer case was not caused by Chernobyl. However, this answer applies only to this specific case. The question of whether there is a connection between the Chernobyl disaster and the increase in diseases in Austria cannot be conclusively answered as long as no profound scientific examinations have been conducted of the facts and circumstances. However, the case also shows that the “Chernobyl“ problem goes far beyond the borders of the Ukraine, White Russia and Russia and many people feel unsure as to what is the real “truth”. Unfortunately this problem is often not taken seriously, and there is a tendency to put people with anxieties regarding the consequences of Chernobyl in the "all-in-the-mind category". At the same time a clarification of the consequences of Chernobyl is urgently required even today, more than 18 years after the disaster. The consequences of Chernobyl are not just a matter of dispute for far-out scientists, they are the nightmares of a whole continent.
